Is EPDM rubber heat resistant?

Choosing rubber unsuitable for high-temperature applications can cause premature degradation, equipment failure, and costly downtime. Clearly understanding EPDM’s heat resistance helps ensure reliable performance.

EPDM rubber is highly heat resistant, performing reliably at temperatures ranging from approximately -50°C up to +150°C. This makes EPDM suitable for various industrial and automotive applications involving prolonged heat exposure.

EPDM rubber heat resistant properties

Throughout my experience supplying sealing solutions, especially to HVAC and automotive industries in Europe, clients frequently ask about EPDM's suitability for heat exposure. Here’s what you should know.

What Temperature Can EPDM Rubber Withstand?

EPDM rubber offers excellent stability and retains its mechanical properties at temperatures typically ranging between -50°C and +150°C. At the higher end, it effectively maintains its elasticity, sealing capabilities, and durability without significant deterioration.

EPDM reliably withstands continuous temperatures up to +150°C and intermittent exposure to even higher temperatures without losing its key performance properties.

EPDM Heat Resistance Summary

Property EPDM Rubber1
Continuous Temperature Up to +150°C ✅
Intermittent Temperature Up to +170°C (briefly)
Low Temperature -50°C
Aging Under Heat Excellent ✅
Ozone & UV Resistance Excellent ✅

For example, an HVAC equipment client used EPDM seals for hot-air ducting systems. EPDM significantly reduced maintenance issues compared to previous materials that degraded under heat exposure.

How Does EPDM Compare to Other Rubbers for Heat Resistance?

EPDM performs better than nitrile (NBR) and natural rubber in high-temperature conditions. However, it does not reach the extreme heat resistance of silicone or FKM (Viton®).

EPDM vs other rubbers heat resistance

Here’s a quick comparison table to illustrate EPDM’s heat resistance against other common rubber materials:

Rubber Type Max. Continuous Temperature
EPDM +150°C ✅
Nitrile (NBR) +120°C ⚪
Silicone +230°C ✅
FKM (Viton®) +230°C ✅
Natural Rubber +70°C ❌

EPDM is ideal when moderate-to-high heat resistance2 and excellent outdoor durability are required at a more cost-effective price point than silicone or Viton®3.

Applications Where EPDM’s Heat Resistance Excels

Due to its robust heat resistance, EPDM is well-suited to applications such as:

  • HVAC system seals and gaskets
  • Automotive cooling hoses and seals
  • Outdoor sealing solutions exposed to sun and heat
  • Industrial sealing for moderate-to-high heat applications

A European client in automotive manufacturing uses EPDM for radiator hoses, engine compartment seals, and heating ducts due to its reliable high-temperature performance4.

When Should You Choose Silicone or Viton® Instead of EPDM?

For extreme heat scenarios exceeding EPDM’s limit of approximately +150°C, silicone or FKM (Viton®) are better choices.

Heat-resistant rubber selection

Scenario Recommended Rubber
General industrial and automotive (<150°C) EPDM ✅
Extreme high temperature5 (150–230°C) Silicone, Viton® ✅
High temperature & oil/chemical resistance Viton®6
Budget-conscious moderate heat scenarios EPDM ✅

For instance, an aerospace client required seals capable of sustaining temperatures above 200°C with exposure to aggressive synthetic oils7. EPDM could not meet these requirements, so we recommended Viton® (FKM).

How to Maximize EPDM Performance in Heat Applications

To ensure optimal EPDM performance under heat, consider these practical tips:

  • Choose quality EPDM compounds specifically designed for heat resistance.
  • Avoid continuous exposure beyond recommended temperature limits.
  • Use proper installation methods to minimize stress and deformation at higher temperatures.
  • Periodically inspect seals for signs of aging or thermal degradation.

Conclusion

EPDM rubber offers excellent heat resistance up to around +150°C, suitable for HVAC, automotive, and industrial applications. For higher temperatures beyond EPDM’s limit, silicone or Viton® are superior alternatives.
