Is fluoroelastomer the same as Viton?

Many engineers ask this during material selection: “Is Viton just another name for fluoroelastomer?” The answer is both yes—and not exactly.

Viton is a brand of fluoroelastomer rubber developed by DuPont (now Chemours). While all Viton is fluoroelastomer (FKM), not all fluoroelastomer is Viton.

In our factory, we’re often asked to quote either “Viton seals” or “FKM parts.” Understanding the difference can help you control cost, quality, and compliance without sacrificing performance.

What is fluoroelastomer?

Fluoroelastomer, also known as FKM (per ISO 1629) or FPM (per DIN/EN), is a family of synthetic rubbers known for their high resistance to heat, oil, fuels, and chemicals.

Fluoroelastomers are premium rubber compounds widely used in sealing applications where aggressive fluids or high temperatures are present.

✅ Core Properties of FKM

Property Value
Heat resistance1 Up to 230°C (some types to 300°C)
Fuel and oil resistance2 Excellent
Chemical resistance3 Very good (except some ketones/amines)
Ozone/UV resistance Excellent
Applications Automotive, chemical, aerospace, HVAC

In our production, we use FKM for crankshaft seals, fuel O-rings, and compressor shaft gaskets—especially when NBR or EPDM would swell or break down.

What is Viton?

Viton is a registered trademark for a line of fluoroelastomers developed by DuPont (now Chemours). It’s the most well-known brand name in the FKM category.

Viton refers specifically to Chemours' proprietary formulation of FKM, known for consistent quality and performance across industries.

📦 About the Brand Viton®

Brand Viton® by Chemours4 (formerly DuPont)
Category Fluoroelastomer (FKM/FPM)
Launched 1957
Applications Aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, HVAC
Types available A, B, F, GF, ETP (each with specific traits)

We source genuine Viton5 on request for customers who must meet aerospace or OEM specs6. It’s more expensive than generic FKM but sometimes required by spec.

Is there a performance difference between Viton and other FKMs?

Yes, and no. For general industrial use, many high-quality non-branded FKMs match Viton in performance. But Viton guarantees tighter control on formulation, traceability, and certification.

Generic FKM can perform just as well as Viton—but only if it comes from a reputable manufacturer with proper formulation and testing.

🔍 FKM vs Viton – Key Differences

Feature Viton (Chemours)7 Generic FKM8
Trademark protection ✅ Yes ❌ No
Chemical consistency Tight quality control Varies by supplier
Certification availability Full data sheets, traceability Sometimes limited
Price Higher More affordable
Compliance (OEM specs) Widely accepted May require validation

If your seal needs FDA compliance9 or must meet aerospace standards (like AMS or MIL), using branded Viton is often the safer route.

When should you specify “Viton” and when is “FKM” enough?

It depends on whether you're buying to spec or to function.

If you're working under specific certifications or with critical equipment, request Viton. If you just need FKM-level performance, a high-grade generic fluoroelastomer will likely suffice.

When to choose Viton vs general FKM

📌 When to Use Viton

  • OEM drawings specifically require “Viton®”
  • Aerospace, military, or nuclear grade applications
  • FDA/EU compliance10 is critical and must be documented
  • You need full material traceability and brand assurance

📌 When Generic FKM Is Enough

  • Automotive aftermarket parts
  • Industrial pumps, compressors, general equipment
  • Cost-sensitive sealing where performance still matters
  • Projects without brand-specific requirements

We’ve helped many customers switch from branded Viton to high-quality generic FKM for cost savings—without sacrificing durability. But we’re always transparent about the difference.

Conclusion

Viton is a type of fluoroelastomer. All Viton is FKM, but not all FKM is Viton. The difference lies in brand, certification, and consistency—not base chemistry.
