What is Nitrile Rubber?

What is SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber)?

SBR is a synthetic rubber made by polymerizing styrene and butadiene. It is one of the most common types of rubber used in tires, as it offers a good balance of properties like wear resistance, low-cost manufacturing, and high tensile strength. SBR is often used in applications that don’t require exposure to high levels of oil or chemicals.

SBR is commonly used in tire manufacturing, seals, and gaskets due to its balance of wear resistance and affordability, though it’s not ideal for high chemical exposure.

While SBR excels in tire manufacturing and other general-purpose applications, it is less resistant to oils and chemicals compared to nitrile rubber. SBR is often found in applications where its properties, such as wear resistance, shock absorption, and ease of processing, are more crucial than chemical resistance. It's frequently used in automotive components like gaskets, seals, and belts, as well as in industrial products that don’t face harsh chemical environments. However, SBR’s temperature resistance is somewhat limited when compared to NBR or other synthetic rubbers.

The choice between NBR and SBR often comes down to the specific environmental factors the material will be exposed to. For instance, SBR’s high abrasion resistance and good wear properties make it perfect for tires, but it will break down quickly if exposed to oils or fuels.
