What material is equivalent to HNBR?

Many buyers ask if they can find a cheaper or alternative material to HNBR. Some hope to match its performance without paying the extra cost.

Materials often considered equivalent to HNBR include high-grade NBR, EPDM, and FKM (Viton). Each can replace HNBR in some cases, but none are identical.

HNBR equivalent materials

I have seen clients switch from HNBR to NBR for cost savings, or upgrade to Viton for chemical resistance. The decision depends on balance between budget and performance.

Why is NBR sometimes used instead of HNBR?

NBR is the base material from which HNBR is derived. It is widely available and much cheaper.

NBR can replace HNBR in applications with moderate temperature and oil exposure, but it lacks ozone and high heat resistance.

I once had a customer who used NBR in indoor hydraulic seals. The system never faced ozone or high heat, so NBR performed well and saved cost.

Comparison of NBR and HNBR

Feature NBR HNBR
Heat resistance Up to 120°C Up to 165°C (peak 180°C)
Oil resistance Good Excellent
Ozone/weathering Poor Excellent
Cost Low Medium

NBR1 is not a full replacement, but it can be equivalent if the application is not harsh.

Can EPDM act as an HNBR equivalent?

EPDM2 is another candidate when ozone and weathering resistance are required. It works well in outdoor sealing.

EPDM can replace HNBR in water, steam, and outdoor applications, but it is weak against oils and fuels.

EPDM vs HNBR

I supplied EPDM gaskets for HVAC ducts where oil resistance3 was not important. EPDM’s ozone resistance made it a better choice than HNBR in that case.

Comparison of EPDM and HNBR

Feature EPDM HNBR
Heat resistance Up to 150°C Up to 165°C
Oil resistance Poor Excellent
Ozone/weathering Excellent Excellent
Chemical resistance Strong for water/steam Strong for oils/fuels
Cost Low Medium

EPDM is “equivalent” to HNBR only when oil and fuel exposure is absent.

Is Viton (FKM) equivalent to HNBR?

Some buyers compare HNBR with Viton because both are high-performance rubbers. In many cases, Viton is considered an upgrade.

Viton can replace HNBR when extreme heat and chemical resistance are needed, but it comes with a higher cost.

HNBR vs Viton

I worked with a chemical plant that first used HNBR. The seals failed in aggressive solvents. Switching to Viton solved the problem, though at double the material cost4.

Comparison of Viton and HNBR

Feature HNBR Viton (FKM)
Heat resistance5 Up to 165°C (peak 180°C) Up to 230°C
Oil/fuel resistance Excellent Outstanding
Ozone/weathering Excellent Excellent
Chemical resistance Good Excellent, even acids/solvents
Cost Medium High

Viton is not equal in price, but in performance it often surpasses HNBR.

Which material is the closest match to HNBR?

The answer depends on the application. No single material matches HNBR exactly, but alternatives exist.

Closest equivalents are: NBR for cost-sensitive oil seals, EPDM for outdoor weather resistance, and Viton for extreme chemical and heat resistance.

Equivalents by Application

Application Scenario Equivalent Material Reason
Indoor hydraulic seals6 NBR Cheaper, sufficient for oil resistance3
Outdoor HVAC gaskets7 EPDM Ozone/weathering resistance
Chemical/fuel systems8 Viton (FKM) Superior heat and chemical stability

From my experience, I always suggest evaluating the environment first. Then choose the closest equivalent to balance performance and cost.

Conclusion

HNBR has no perfect equivalent. NBR, EPDM, and Viton can replace it in certain conditions, but each has trade-offs.
