A spiral duct fitting gasket is usually installed around a circular duct fitting1. When the fitting is inserted into the spiral duct, the gasket is compressed between the fitting and the duct wall. This compression helps reduce air leakage and improves sealing performance.

Some buyers choose EPDM because it is common, but they may not understand why it fits HVAC duct sealing.

EPDM is a practical material for HVAC gasket applications because duct systems often face air movement, moisture, temperature change, dust, and long service time.4 Outdoor duct sections or rooftop HVAC systems may also face sunlight, rain, ozone, and weather aging.

EPDM is practical, but not universal

In a normal spiral duct fitting application, this is usually not a problem. However, if the duct system is near oil mist, chemical vapor, or special industrial exhaust, the buyer should confirm media exposure before ordering.

For standard HVAC air duct sealing, EPDM is often a reasonable material direction.5 But I still check these points before confirming:

The material must match the real application. But after material is confirmed, construction becomes the next important decision.

How Do You Confirm the Correct Gasket Size?

A good EPDM material cannot fix a gasket that is too small, too large, too hard, or poorly fitted.9

To confirm the correct gasket size, buyers should check duct diameter, fitting groove design, gasket cross-section, compression allowance, tolerance, and real installation fit.

Without clear testing expectations, buyers may receive gaskets that look correct but fail during installation or leakage checks.12

Standards should be confirmed by project

Some HVAC or ductwork projects may reference standards or guidance related to duct leakage, ventilation ductwork, or project-specific air tightness classes. Depending on the market, buyers may mention EN 12237, EN 1507, DW/144, SMACNA guidance, or internal project specifications. These requirements need verification for each project.

As a rubber gasket manufacturer, I do not pretend to replace a duct-system design institute or certified laboratory. My role is to help buyers make the gasket according to the drawing, material requirement, fit condition, and inspection plan. If the project requires a specific leakage class or standard compliance, the buyer should provide the exact document requirement during RFQ.

Testing should include the gasket construction

For molded one-piece gaskets, inspection focuses on dimensions, material, surface, hardness, and molding quality16. For extruded-and-joined gaskets, the bonded seam should receive special attention.

This is because the joint can become the weak point. The rubber profile may be good. The EPDM compound may be correct. But if the bonded joint opens when the gasket is stretched, installed, or compressed, leakage can happen at that point.17

So buyers should not only ask, “Is the material EPDM?” They should also ask, “How is the ring made, and how is the joint controlled?”

How Should EPDM Gaskets Be Installed on Spiral Duct Fittings?

A good gasket can still leak if it is twisted, stretched too much, or damaged during installation.

EPDM gaskets should be installed evenly on the fitting groove, kept clean, protected from twisting, and checked for correct seating before the duct fitting is inserted.

Installation is one reason gasket construction matters. During assembly, the gasket may face stretching, pulling, rolling, and friction. If the gasket is a bonded extruded ring, the seam area may face extra stress.

Extruded-and-joined ring installation risk

A common cost-down choice we see is an extruded EPDM strip bonded into a ring.18 This can be attractive because tooling cost is lower than a molded one-piece gasket. For some low-risk or temporary applications, it may be acceptable.

However, in actual installation, the bonded joint can become the weak point. If the installer pulls the gasket, twists it, or pushes the fitting with uneven force, the joint may separate or open slightly. Even a small opening can create an air leakage path.

This is why I always ask buyers how the gasket will be installed. If the gasket will be stretched over the fitting, handled roughly on site, or used in a leakage-sensitive system, the construction method matters.19

What Causes Spiral Duct Gasket Failure or Air Leakage?

Many leakage problems are blamed on rubber quality, but the real cause may be size, joint construction, installation, or wrong cost decisions.

Spiral duct gasket failure can come from poor fit, weak bonded joints, wrong hardness, incorrect compression, installation damage, aging, surface defects, or unsuitable gasket construction.

For spiral duct fitting gaskets, leakage usually happens when the gasket cannot keep continuous sealing contact around the full circumference.20 This can happen for several reasons.

The real cost of a weak joint

This is the buying mistake I want to highlight. A buyer may compare two EPDM gasket quotations:

I do not say every joined extruded ring is wrong. It depends on the application, joint quality, installation stress, and leakage requirement. But I do say this clearly: if air leakage risk matters, buyers should not ignore gasket construction.

When molded one-piece gaskets are safer

A molded one-piece gasket is usually a safer recommendation when:

  • The duct system has strict leakage expectations.
  • Installation stress is high.
  • The gasket may be stretched during assembly.
  • The buyer wants fewer joint-related risks.
  • Rework cost is high.
  • The project needs better consistency.
  • The gasket shape is not easy to join reliably.
  • Long-term sealing reliability matters more than lowest tooling cost.

This is the life-cycle cost view. The right gasket is not always the cheapest gasket at the quotation stage. It is the gasket that gives the buyer a stable installation result and lower failure risk.

What Should Buyers Provide for a Custom EPDM Spiral Duct Gasket RFQ?

A vague RFQ leads to price comparison without real technical comparison, which increases the risk of choosing the wrong gasket.

Buyers should provide fitting size, gasket drawing, sample, EPDM requirement, hardness, construction preference, installation method, quantity, leakage expectation, testing needs, and target lead time.

Before choosing an extruded-and-joined ring only to reduce cost, buyers should ask:

  • What is the cost of rework if leakage happens?
  • Is tooling cost more important than long-term sealing reliability?

These questions are practical. They help buyers compare total cost, not only unit price.

Tooling, MOQ, and lead time

For a molded one-piece EPDM gasket, tooling cost is usually higher because a mold must be made for the ring geometry. MOQ depends on gasket size, material, production efficiency, and order planning. Lead time includes drawing review, mold making, sample production, inspection, sample approval, and mass production.

For an extruded-and-joined ring, the initial tooling may be lower if the profile is simple or existing tooling can be used. However, cutting, bonding, joint control, and inspection still add process steps. A lower tooling cost does not automatically mean lower total project cost.
